Burglars steal designer handbags worth around $35,000

CARY, NC (WRAL/CNN) — Armed robberies at luxury retailers have been making headlines in major cities in recent weeks.

It seems that crime is also hitting small towns.

Nicole Denny, owner of a store in suburban Raleigh, North Carolina, said thieves stole her handbags worth tens of thousands of dollars.

The security video inside the J’adore store shows the two thieves in action.

After walking through the front door, they immediately go behind the counter, slipping thousands of dollars worth of luxury handbags.

“Somewhere between $35,000 and $38,000 in handbags,” Denny said. Louie Vuitton, Gucci and Chanel are gone in 30 seconds.

This brazen crime is part of a recent wave of smash and grabs from coast to coast.

California is one of the states hardest hit by a wave of thefts.

Last month in the Bay Area, a group of thieves attacked a Nordstrom security guard before robbing them with expensive merchandise.

“That Nordstrom that got hit is my hometown so it was hard for me to watch that. It’s just a shame, it’s a shame,” Denny said.

She said her store has been a constant target of thieves, especially in recent weeks.

Customers make thousands of dollars in fraudulent credit card purchases, lost money for which she is responsible.

Losses hang over her, a single mother of two.

“My son sat me down last night. He’s 15. He said, ‘Mom, I don’t like seeing you like this,'” Denny said.

“Fortunately, I can (survive) because I’m smart and I’ve had a hard time,” she said. “Am I happy with it? Am I happy to have to use my rainy day fund to provide criminal behavior so they can sell my bags on the black market and put money in their pockets? »

Police have not made any arrests in connection with the crime.
